RECENT PAINTINGS & SCULPTURES
My sculptures are objects extracted from the atmospheres of my paintings. As three-dimensional objects on earth, they contend with gravity. At the moment, I work with two types of structures for the sculptures. The first resembles banded structures of one of the most basic necessities of humanity—homes, shelters—offering safety and protection and recognizing a primal need for survival. The other method is what I think of as columns of stratified earth much like a geologist would gather core samples. They are cross sections of the worlds captured in the paintings—but here are solid and tangible.
The paintings are internal worlds—psyches as landscapes made of physical substance that can be poured, collapsed, and reshaped—for beneficial or maybe cataclysmic transformation. For the works on paper, I work intuitively and experiment with different palettes and mark making until I encounter one that resonates, a live wire. Then, I will produce about 10–15 of that universe until moving on to the next.
